“A digital product passport, or a DPP, is essentially a digital record linked with a physical product that contains a comprehensive set of information pertaining to that specific product.” Digital Product Passports can include information like manufacturing location, the product’s materials and composition, date and time, instruction and maintenance manuals, and service history.

To capture the information in a DPP, is a project funded by the EU called the CIRPASS project, which is a collaborative initiative to prepare for the piloting and deployment of a standards-based DPP aligned with requirements that are a part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulations or ESPR.  The initial focus will be on electronics, batteries, and textiles.  We have seen this regulatory standardization come about in the medical device industry through the European Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR) and the FDA’s Unified Device Identifier (UDI).

With the increase in EU regulatory requirements for products, digital product passports will soon be required across a broad range of product categories, and organizations wishing to sell their goods in the EU will need to comply. As of now, the mandate refers to a battery regulation that passed in July of 2023 mandating the “adoption of QR-code based digital battery passports starting February 18th, 2027, for all-electric vehicles, light mobility vehicle and industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2kWh.”  Additional products will follow suit between 2026-2030, providing manufacturers with time to identify and modify the products within their supply chain.
